A hare mocks a tortoise for being so slow, and the tortoise challenges him to a race, with the fox to set the course and be the judge. The hare races so far ahead that he lies down for a rest and falls asleep, while the tortoise plods steadily on and wins before the hare wakes: slow and steady wins the race. Aesop's fable in V. S. Vernon Jones's 1912 translation.
