The Dog and Its Reflection
by Aesop, 1912
A dog crossing a plank bridge with a piece of meat in his mouth sees his own reflection in the stream and takes it for another dog with a piece twice as big. He lets go of his own to snatch the larger one, and ends with neither: one was only a shadow, and the other was carried away by the current. Aesop's fable in V. S. Vernon Jones's 1912 translation.
